Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have had a disappointing IPL 2025 campaign, getting knocked out of playoff contention for the first time in years. Amid the underwhelming performances, questions have been raised about MS Dhoni’s future in the league.
‘Spark Missing in Dhoni’: Tom Moody’s Honest Take
Former Australia all-rounder and IPL coach Tom Moody has voiced concerns about MS Dhoni’s form and body language. Speaking on ESPN Cricinfo’s ‘TimeOut’, Moody said, “Every team is a mirror of their leaders… I just don’t see the same spark in MS Dhoni that I saw in previous years.” He further added, “We all have a fire inside, and sometimes we need to recognise when it’s starting to flicker—or go out.”
Dhoni, who stepped in as stand-in captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury, has been criticized for his low batting order and limited finishing impact. Apart from a standout knock against Lucknow, he has struggled to close out matches.
Dhoni Hints at Retirement, But Keeps Doors Open
After CSK’s win against KKR earlier in the season, Dhoni reflected on his future: “There’s no escaping the fact that I’m in the last phase of my career… I’ll have to see if my body can take the pressure after this IPL.” His remarks fueled speculation about IPL 2026 being his possible farewell season.
So far in IPL 2025, Dhoni has scored 180 runs in 12 matches at a strike rate of 140.63. CSK will play their last two games against Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans, hoping to avoid a last-place finish—a spot they’ve never occupied in IPL history.
