Roston Chase Named West Indies’ New Test Captain

Roston Chase Named New West Indies Test Captain

West Indies allrounder Roston Chase has been named the new captain of the West Indies Test team. The 33-year-old will lead the side in the upcoming three-Test home series against Australia, beginning June 25 at his home ground in Bridgetown, Barbados. This series marks the beginning of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle for both nations.

Chase, who last played a Test in March 2022, will be leading the team in what will be his 50th Test match. He takes over from Kraigg Brathwaite, who stepped down earlier this year after captaining West Indies in 39 Tests.

Selection Process and Vice-Captain Announcement

According to Cricket West Indies (CWI), Chase was chosen from a shortlist of six candidates following a detailed assessment that included psychometric testing. Other shortlisted names included John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, and Jomel Warrican—who will now serve as Chase’s vice-captain.

White-ball captain Shai Hope had opted out of contention for the Test leadership to focus on ODIs and T20Is. CWI president Kishore Shallow called the selection process “comprehensive and forward-thinking,” adding that it set a new standard for leadership appointments.

Chase’s Test Record and Immediate Challenges

Chase has scored 2,265 runs in Tests at an average of 26.33 and has picked up 85 wickets with his off-spin. His form has dipped in recent years, with a batting average that has significantly fallen since his impressive debut years. Improving his consistency will be a top priority as he begins this new chapter.

Former captain Brathwaite’s era saw notable wins, including a series victory over England in 2022 and a historic Gabba win in 2024. Chase now faces the challenge of continuing that momentum while rebuilding his own form and uniting a promising squad of young bowlers.

West Indies fans will be watching closely as a new era begins under Roston Chase’s leadership.
