BCCI Yet to Discuss India’s Participation in Asia Cup 2025

BCCI Yet to Decide on India's Asia Cup 2025 Plans

Amid growing tensions between India and Pakistan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified that it has not yet discussed India’s participation in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.

In a statement issued on Monday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed speculation that India would withdraw from the tournament, stating that no communication has been made with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) regarding any withdrawal or event scheduling.

“The Asia Cup matter or any other ACC event issue has not come up for discussion at any level,” Saikia said. “Our prime focus is on the ongoing IPL and subsequent England series.”

No Confirmation on Venue or Schedule Yet

The Asia Cup, expected to be played in T20 format this September, still lacks an official schedule or venue, further adding to the uncertainty. While India was initially expected to host the six-team tournament, the ACC has not made any announcements, and political tensions have reignited the debate over India’s willingness to participate, especially if matches involve Pakistan.

This follows the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam and brief military escalations, which temporarily suspended both the IPL and PSL. Although both tournaments resumed after a ceasefire was agreed upon on May 10, political relations remain strained.

History of India-Pakistan Tensions Affecting Cricket

Cricketing ties between India and Pakistan have long been subject to diplomatic tensions. India typically requires government clearance to face Pakistan, even in multinational tournaments.

In the 2023 Asia Cup, India refused to travel to Pakistan, resulting in a hybrid format where Sri Lanka hosted all India matches, including the final. A similar scenario unfolded during the 2025 Champions Trophy, where India again played all matches in Dubai instead of Pakistan.

India-Pakistan matches are some of the most-watched sporting events globally, heavily influencing broadcast valuations for both ICC and ACC. However, political instability has repeatedly forced scheduling changes, tournament withdrawals, and cancellations.

What Lies Ahead?

With no formal stance taken yet by the BCCI and the ACC silent on final plans, the fate of India’s participation in the Asia Cup 2025 remains unclear. Meanwhile, India’s immediate focus stays on the IPL 2025 playoffs and the upcoming England series for both men and women.
