Marnus Labuschagne’s upcoming County Championship match for Glamorgan against Middlesex could be pivotal in determining his place in Australia’s XI for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa. After twin failures against Northamptonshire, the pressure is mounting on the star batter to rediscover his touch.
Australia’s selectors, led by George Bailey, are finalizing the team structure, especially the top three. With Usman Khawaja set to open, the big question is who partners him — Labuschagne, Sam Konstas, or potentially Josh Inglis.
Labuschagne’s Lean Patch Raises Questions
Labuschagne, though an incumbent with a Test average of 46.76 and 11 centuries, has struggled in the current WTC cycle, averaging just 28.33 with only one hundred in 29 innings. His recent dismissals — both edges to slip while squared up — against Northamptonshire have further dented his confidence. His last first-class ton came in June 2024.
Despite his proven record and experience in English conditions, his form may force selectors to consider alternatives. Bailey, however, stressed that performance alone may not be the deciding factor.
“We know he’s a quality player… but getting match time under his belt is important,” Bailey said.
Green’s Rise Strengthens Middle-Order, Konstas Waits
Cameron Green, who recently returned from injury, has made a strong case with back-to-back solid performances, despite not bowling yet. His latest outing against Kent showcased his readiness, with selectors praising his match fitness and temperament.
Meanwhile, 20-year-old Sam Konstas is also in the frame. He’s been training in Brisbane against elite pace from Hazlewood, Starc, and Boland — a clear indication of his growing status. Whether selectors trust him for the opener’s role remains to be seen.
Bailey added:
“The idea of a ‘specialist opener’ is sometimes overplayed. Many batters can adapt depending on conditions.”
WTC Final Selection Looms
Australia’s final squad will depend on multiple variables — Green’s fitness, Hazlewood’s shoulder rehab, and Beau Webster’s utility. But Labuschagne’s outing against Middlesex may well tip the scales.
With the WTC final fast approaching, all eyes will be on Cardiff to see whether Labuschagne can reaffirm his spot — or if a new name rises to the challenge.
