Punjab Kings (PBKS) have officially secured a place in IPL 2025 Qualifier 1 after a dominant seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians. For the first time in 11 years, PBKS have made it to the playoffs — and they’ve done it in style by finishing in the top two.
The architect behind this incredible turnaround? None other than Shreyas Iyer, whose leadership has earned high praise from head coach Ricky Ponting.
‘He’s Given Them a Kick in the Pants’: Ponting
Speaking after the win, Ponting was all praise for Iyer, who was bought for a massive ₹26.75 crore in the IPL 2025 auction. The former Australia captain, who previously worked with Iyer during their stint with Delhi Capitals, admitted he was determined to reunite with him at Punjab.
“I was pretty keen to work with him again. We made a final together in Delhi, and I’ve known him for a long time. He’s a quality person,” said Ponting.
Ponting credited Iyer’s ability to motivate his players, saying:
“He’s spent time with every single player. He’s patted them on the back when they needed it, and given them a kick in the pants when they needed that too. That’s what strong leaders do.”
PBKS Not Celebrating Yet, Says Ponting
Despite reaching Qualifier 1, Ponting stressed that the real job is far from done.
“We haven’t achieved anything yet. Yes, it’s a proud moment for the group, but the big games are still ahead. This is just the beginning.”
PBKS will face either Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) or Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 on May 29 in Mullanpur.
Inglis, Arya, and the Bowlers Shine in PBKS Win
In the key match against Mumbai Indians, Josh Inglis (73) and Priyansh Arya (62) led a successful chase of 185, finishing the match with nine balls to spare.
Earlier in the match, PBKS bowlers Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, and Vijaykumar Vyshak each took two wickets to limit MI to 184/7.
With Iyer’s leadership, Ponting’s strategy, and the squad firing in all departments, Punjab Kings are now serious contenders for the IPL 2025 title.
