As the Mumbai Indians (MI) gear up for the IPL 2025 Eliminator on May 30, concerns around Rohit Sharma’s form and intent have taken center stage. Despite flashes of brilliance this season, the former MI captain has struggled for consistency and has mostly played as an Impact Player in the tournament.
With just 329 runs from 13 matches, including three half-centuries, Rohit’s lean patch continues from last season when he managed only one century. As MI chase a record-extending sixth IPL title, former India pacer Atul Wassan has questioned Rohit’s hunger to perform at the top level.
“He seems a bit disinterested. The motivation, the fire in the belly—it’s not the same anymore. He has already won almost everything,” Wassan said on Bails and Banter on the OTTplay app.
“Needs Some Future Aim,” Says Wassan
Rohit Sharma, now 38, has already retired from Test and T20I cricket, but continues to lead India in ODIs, having recently won the ICC Champions Trophy in March. However, Wassan believes a clear personal goal is vital to maintain performance levels.
“A player needs an aim—whether it’s legacy or longevity. No player wants to undo their hard-earned reputation and leave fans with bad memories,” he added.
Playoff Stage Set: Will Rohit Rise?
Despite the struggles, Wassan expressed faith in Rohit’s experience and predicted a strong performance in the upcoming IPL Playoffs.
“I still believe he has one classic innings left in him this season,” said Wassan.
With Qualifier 1 on May 29 and MI set to play the Eliminator on May 30, all eyes will be on whether the Hitman can silence critics and help MI in their push for IPL glory.
