Mumbai Indians’ dream of a sixth IPL title was crushed after a heavy defeat to Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025. Despite posting 204 runs, MI failed to defend the total, as PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer played a breathtaking knock of 87* off 41 balls. The loss meant MI have now gone five years without lifting the trophy.
Pandya Praises Iyer and Reflects on Strategy
After the match, MI captain Hardik Pandya gave credit to Shreyas Iyer for his fearless batting. “The way he batted, took his chances… some of the shots were just outstanding,” said Pandya.
When asked if the target was enough, he admitted the bowling execution was poor. “I think 203 was a par score. We didn’t execute under pressure. It’s not about the pitch — it’s about bowling the right lengths and using the right bowlers at the right time. Maybe I could’ve managed the bowling unit better,” he added.
Bumrah’s Timing Questioned
One major point of discussion was Jasprit Bumrah being held back until the 18th over, when PBKS needed only 31 runs from 18 balls. Bumrah bowled well but it was too late to stop the momentum.
Hardik stood by his decision: “Boom can always do something special, even with only 18 balls left. It just didn’t happen today.”
What’s Next for MI?
The loss marks the end of MI’s IPL 2025 journey, while PBKS march on to the final to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Mumbai will now regroup and look ahead to IPL 2026 with hopes of returning stronger.
