The celebrations following Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2025 win turned tragic as a stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru killed 11 people and injured 33. In response, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia expressed deep sorrow, calling the incident both “shocking and disgraceful.”
BCCI Distances Itself From the Event
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Saikia clarified that BCCI had no role in organizing the public celebration. He emphasized that the lack of planning and violation of safety protocols led to this disaster:
“I am not just shocked, but disgraced by what happened. This was supposed to be a colorful closing to the IPL season, and it turned into a nightmare.”
He noted that when BCCI or state cricket associations hold large events like the IPL Final or World Cup parades, they work closely with police and local administration to maintain crowd control and safety.
Lack of Planning Cited for Chaos
Thousands of RCB fans gathered outside the stadium to welcome their favorite players. But with no visible crowd management measures in place, chaos unfolded. Saikia remarked that the short notice and poor planning likely contributed to the incident:
“It is not possible to plan such an event at short notice. There must have been serious lapses by the organizers and district authorities.”
Calls for Future Protocols and Safety Norms
The BCCI secretary hinted at future discussions with IPL franchises to set proper norms for post-tournament celebrations:
“We need to do some soul-searching. Maybe we’ll need to set clear protocols for such events in the future to prevent tragedies like this.”
Saikia confirmed that the BCCI would review its approach and possibly suggest new guidelines to ensure better safety in upcoming seasons.
