Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has reassured that Karun Nair will get a fair opportunity in the upcoming five-Test series against England. Unlike his previous short stint, Gambhir asserted that the team won’t judge Karun by just “one or two Tests” this time.
Nair’s Red-Hot Form Forces Comeback
Karun earned a much-deserved recall after a stellar domestic season. He scored:
- 863 runs in 9 Ranji Trophy matches (including 4 centuries)
- 779 runs in 8 Vijay Hazare Trophy innings (5 hundreds)
- A double century (204 off 281) for India A vs England Lions
These performances revived hope for the right-hander to finally secure a permanent spot in the red-ball setup, especially with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from the format.
“We Will Back Him” – Gambhir
Before flying to England, Gambhir addressed the media, praising Karun’s persistence and domestic grind.
“If someone has scored heaps of runs, he deserves a decent run at the international level. We won’t judge him on one or two matches.”
He further added that Karun’s previous exposure to county cricket and India A experience would help India in the crucial England tour.
Second Chance After 2017 Setback
Karun Nair famously scored a triple century against England in 2016 but was dropped after just 3 more Tests. Now, eight years later, he has a golden opportunity to cement his place.
“It’s good for domestic cricket too. Youngsters can see that consistent performance still opens doors,” Gambhir added.
