Is Rohit Sharma’s ODI Captaincy Nearing the End?

Rohit Sharma’s ODI Captaincy Future in Doubt

BCCI Expected Rohit to Retire After Champions Trophy

The BCCI reportedly believed that Rohit Sharma would retire from ODIs after India’s Champions Trophy 2025 win in Dubai. However, Rohit surprised everyone by confirming he will continue playing ODIs.

Rohit said after the final:
“One more thing. I am not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure there are no rumours spread moving forward. Thank you so much.”

But now, with the 2027 World Cup more than two years away, there’s uncertainty over whether Rohit will continue as India’s ODI captain.

Split Captaincy Era Begins in Indian Cricket

Rohit remains India’s ODI captain, but the team has already embraced split captaincy. Suryakumar Yadav has taken charge of T20Is, while Shubman Gill is preparing to lead in Tests. With 27 ODIs scheduled before the next World Cup, BCCI may use this time to test future leaders like Gill and Shreyas Iyer.

BCCI chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar is likely to lead the discussion on India’s next ODI captain soon. The transition could happen faster than expected.

Rohit’s Record Speaks, But Age Raises Questions

Rohit Sharma’s white-ball captaincy record is strong. Under his leadership, India has won two ICC trophies—T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025—and lost only one match in those tournaments.

Still, by 2027, Rohit will be 40, and fitness and form will be crucial. With Virat Kohli also nearing 40, India seems to be looking ahead.

Here is India’s upcoming ODI schedule until end-2026:

  • Aug 2025: 3 ODIs in Bangladesh
  • Oct 2025: 3 ODIs in Australia
  • Nov 2025: 3 ODIs vs South Africa (Home)
  • Jan 2026: 3 ODIs vs New Zealand (Home)
  • Jun 2026: 3 ODIs vs Afghanistan (Home)
  • Jul 2026: 3 ODIs in England
  • Sep 2026: 3 ODIs vs West Indies (Home)
  • Nov 2026: 3 ODIs in New Zealand
  • Dec 2026: 3 ODIs vs Sri Lanka (Home)

India has plenty of time—and matches—to build a future-ready team before the 2027 World Cup.
