Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has weighed in on two major selection debates for India’s first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, starting June 20, 2025. In a chat on The ICC Review, Shastri finalized his playing XI and made some notable picks—and omissions.
Shardul Thakur Over Nitish Reddy
Shastri picked Shardul Thakur as the seam-bowling all-rounder over the rising star Nitish Reddy, citing experience and bowling utility.
“It’ll be a tough one between Shardul and Nitish Reddy. But if Reddy can’t give you 12–14 overs consistently, Shardul gets the nod,” said Shastri.
Thakur recently scored a 122 in the intra-squad game*, strengthening his case. He also has a solid track record in English conditions from India’s 2021 tour, with both bat and ball.
No Place for Kuldeep Yadav
Despite his recent form and calls for variety in the spin department, Shastri opted for Ravindra Jadeja over Kuldeep Yadav, praising Jadeja’s all-round value.
“I’d back Jadeja at No. 7 for his control and batting depth,” he added.
Three-Pacer Formula
Considering the likely overcast conditions in Leeds, Shastri stuck with a three-pacer strategy. His choices:
- Jasprit Bumrah
- Mohammed Siraj
- Prasidh Krishna / Arshdeep Singh (condition-dependent)
If cloud cover persists, left-armer Arshdeep could be a game-changer with his natural swing, according to Shastri.
Team India Under New Era
India, led by new captain Shubman Gill, is chasing its first Test series win in England since 2007. The team arrived in Leeds after an intra-squad match in Kent and is now joined by head coach Gautam Gambhir, who rejoined after a brief absence.
