Gautam Gambhir gives Yashasvi Jaiswal a stern talk after fielding lapses ahead of 2nd Test vs England

Gambhir Jaiswal in tense chat ahead of 2nd Test

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who impressed with a century in his debut Test innings in England, found himself under scrutiny after a series of dropped catches during the Leeds Test. Jaiswal dropped four crucial chances in the slip cordon, contributing to India’s five-wicket defeat in the opening match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

Ahead of the second Test in Birmingham, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen having an animated conversation with Jaiswal during practice at Edgbaston. According to a video report by Revsportz, Gambhir appeared visibly displeased while working with Jaiswal on short-catching drills, accompanied by assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate.

Changes in fielding drills

Jaiswal, previously positioned in the slip cordon, was not seen fielding in that role during the latest practice session. Instead, newcomer Sai Sudharsan took over in the gully during fielding drills. The change is believed to be part of the team’s effort to ease pressure on Jaiswal following his recent lapses.

This isn’t the first time Jaiswal has come under fire for his fielding. On the tour of Australia last season, he dropped key chances of Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja, which were also discussed within the team management.

Support and explanation from team management

Addressing the media on Monday, ten Doeschate said the move was aimed at rebuilding Jaiswal’s confidence.

“Yashasvi has been a very good catcher for us,” he said. “But his hands are quite sore and we want to give him a break from gully for now. We also need to build depth in other close-catching positions, like short leg, especially if we play two spinners.”

Despite his fielding struggles, Jaiswal remains an important part of India’s batting line-up. The team is counting on the young left-hander to provide a solid start as they seek a series-levelling win at Edgbaston from July 2.
