MS Dhoni Registers ‘Captain Cool’ as Trademark After ICC Honour

MS Dhoni Applies for 'Captain Cool' Trademark

India’s iconic cricket captain MS Dhoni has officially filed for the trademark of the phrase ‘Captain Cool’, a title that fans and media have long associated with his calm and composed leadership style. Days after his induction into the ICC Hall of Fame, the former skipper moved to legally own the nickname that has defined much of his cricketing legacy.

According to a report by PTI, Dhoni’s trademark application for ‘Captain Cool’ has been accepted and advertised, which means it has cleared the initial examination process and is now open for public scrutiny. The application was published in the Trade Marks Journal on June 16, 2025.

The trademark has been filed under the category covering sports training, coaching services, and facilities related to sports. This move potentially sets the stage for Dhoni-branded coaching academies, merchandise, or other sports-related ventures.

Another company, Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Pvt Ltd, had also filed a similar application for the same phrase. However, their application currently shows the status as ‘rectification filed’, which usually indicates a legal or technical challenge to the submission.

In India, the trademark registration process involves examination for format and merit. Once approved, the trademark is published in the official journal to allow any objections. If none are raised within the given period, the trademark is officially granted.

Dhoni Plans Ahead with Strategic Branding Move

By applying for the ‘Captain Cool’ trademark, Dhoni appears to be laying the groundwork for his next chapter beyond the playing field. Whether it involves cricket academies, training programs, or branded content, the move signals a thoughtful approach to preserving and monetizing his legendary image.

Dhoni’s Legacy and ICC Hall of Fame Induction

Earlier this month, Dhoni was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame for the class of 2025. He was honoured alongside Matthew Hayden, Graeme Smith, Daniel Vettori, and Hashim Amla. In his acceptance statement, Dhoni expressed gratitude for being named among legends of the game, calling it a moment he will cherish forever.

Dhoni remains one of the most successful cricket captains in history. He led India to the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy titles. Across 90 Tests, 350 ODIs, and 98 T20Is, he earned a reputation for calm leadership and lightning-fast reflexes behind the stumps.

His record-breaking 183* against Sri Lanka in 2005 still stands as the highest score by a wicketkeeper in ODI history. Known for his finishing skills and tactical genius, Dhoni scored over 10,000 runs in ODIs at an impressive average of 50.57.

Last Appearance in IPL 2025

MS Dhoni last played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025, taking over captaincy mid-season after Ruturaj Gaikwad was injured. Despite his efforts, CSK finished at the bottom of the points table for the first time, marking a difficult season for the franchise.

With the ‘Captain Cool’ trademark now in motion, Dhoni seems poised to continue building his post-retirement brand while staying connected to the world of sports.
