Sourav Ganguly Cautions Shubman Gill: ‘Honeymoon Period Won’t Last’

Sourav Ganguly Warns Shubman Gill on Captaincy

India’s dominant 336-run win over England at Edgbaston has put Shubman Gill firmly in the spotlight—not just as a batter, but as India’s newest Test captain. But Sourav Ganguly, former Indian skipper and BCCI president, has a timely reminder: the pressure is just getting started.

Celebrating his 53rd birthday at Eden Gardens, Ganguly praised Gill’s sensational form, calling it “the best I’ve seen him bat.” Gill has amassed 585 runs in just two Tests, with three centuries, including a record-breaking 269, and an average of 146.25—the most by an Indian in a Test series on English soil since Rahul Dravid in 2002.

Ganguly’s Message: Pressure Ahead

“He has just become captain — it’s a honeymoon period. But the pressure will build in the next three Tests,” Ganguly said, noting that Gill’s mettle will truly be tested as the series progresses.

With three Tests still to play and the series tied at 1-1, Gill also has a chance to surpass some historic feats. He is:

  • 18 runs shy of Dravid’s 602-run record in a Test series in England
  • 225 runs away from breaking Don Bradman’s 88-year-old record of 810 runs in an Ashes series as captain

India’s Talent Pipeline Impresses Ganguly

Ganguly also emphasized the depth of Indian cricket, naming young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Akash Deep, Mukesh Kumar, and Mohammed Siraj as rising stars who are stepping up in the absence of seniors like Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R. Ashwin.

“In every generation, whenever there’s a void, talent emerges to fill it,” Ganguly noted.

Focus Shifts to Lord’s

While Edgbaston marked India’s first-ever Test win at the venue, Ganguly stressed that “it’s just one-all”, and every match going forward will start from scratch. The third Test begins at Lord’s on July 10, and all eyes will be on whether Gill can maintain his form and leadership under mounting expectations.
