Jasprit Bumrah delivered a brilliant spell of fast bowling on Day 2 of the third Test at Lord’s, claiming 5 wickets for 74 runs. His performance helped India bowl out England for 387. However, what caught fans by surprise was his quiet reaction after taking his fifth wicket. Unlike past celebrations, Bumrah showed no emotion after dismissing Jofra Archer to complete his five-wicket haul.
The achievement was significant. Bumrah not only surpassed Kapil Dev’s record for most overseas five-fors by an Indian but also earned his name on the Lord’s honours board for the first time in his career. Yet, there was no fist pump or loud celebration.
In the post-day press conference, Bumrah explained that he was simply exhausted. “The reality is that I was tired. I bowled for a long time. I’m not 21 or 22 anymore that I’ll jump around,” he said. He added that he was happy with his performance but preferred to focus on getting back to his mark and continuing his rhythm.
Bumrah Leads the Charge as India Fight Back
Bumrah’s fiery morning spell saw him dismiss England captain Ben Stokes, key batter Joe Root, and all-rounder Chris Woakes in quick succession. England crumbled from 251/4 to 271/7, giving India a strong grip on the game. However, a late 84-run partnership between Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse helped England push their total close to 400.
Bumrah’s five-for was his 15th in Test cricket and his second in this series, having taken one in the previous match at Leeds. His delivery to clean bowl Root was a standout moment of the day.
India Respond with Grit at the Crease
In reply, India reached 145/3 at stumps. KL Rahul played a steady innings, remaining unbeaten on 53. Rishabh Pant batted at No. 5 despite a finger injury and stayed not out on 19. Jofra Archer, making his return to Test cricket, dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal in just his third ball. Karun Nair added 40 runs before being caught brilliantly by Joe Root.
Shubman Gill, who scored twin centuries in the previous Test, managed only 16 in the first innings. The match remains evenly poised heading into Day 3, with India trailing by 242 runs.
