England could face a major setback in the fifth and final Test against India at The Oval, as veteran pacer Chris Woakes is likely to miss the rest of the match due to a shoulder injury. The 36-year-old injured himself while diving to stop a boundary late on Day 1 and walked off holding his left arm in pain. Reports suggest he underwent scans overnight, and while an official confirmation is pending, the update doesn’t sound promising.
England pacer Gus Atkinson spoke to BBC, saying, “It doesn’t look great. I will be surprised if he takes any part in the game.” Woakes, who stayed on the ground receiving treatment, had been England’s most consistent pace option throughout the series, playing all four previous Tests. He struck on Day 1 by dismissing KL Rahul with a sharp inswinger, but his exit now leaves England’s bowling attack thinner.
Stokes and Archer Already Missing from England’s Lineup
England’s fast-bowling resources were already stretched. Captain Ben Stokes, the series’ top wicket-taker, was sidelined due to a shoulder issue of his own. Meanwhile, Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer were rested to manage their workloads. That left Atkinson, Jamie Overton, and Josh Tongue with the task of handling the bulk of the pace duties.
Woakes’ injury could also impact his international future. With limited overseas success and age against him, a long recovery could reduce his chances of being included in England’s Ashes plans later this year.
England now face a serious challenge in keeping India from leveling the series 2-2, especially with one of their key bowlers likely ruled out for the rest of the match.
