Shubman Gill’s Run-Out Sparks Debate, Coach Shows Support

Shubman Gill's run-out draws mixed reactions at Oval

Shubman Gill‘s promising innings in the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval came to an abrupt end due to a reckless run-out. Batting confidently, Gill fell for 21 off 35 balls, misjudging a single in the 28th over. He started for a run, hesitated mid-pitch, and was caught short by Gus Atkinson’s direct hit. With India already under pressure, his dismissal dealt a heavy blow.

Fans and former cricketers were quick to criticize the casual nature of his exit. However, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate offered a more forgiving take in the post-day press conference. He called it a “misjudgment” but highlighted Gill’s remarkable form throughout the series.

India Coach Emphasizes Gill’s Series Performance

“I’m assuming not as frustrating as it is for him. He’s in the touch of his life,” said ten Doeschate. He acknowledged the error but emphasized that such moments are part of the game. The coach added that Gill made batting look easy before the mistake and attributed the run-out to aggressive intent rather than lack of focus.

Ten Doeschate suggested the team encourages strike rotation and pushing for runs, but admitted this one was poorly timed. “Given what he’s done in the first four Tests, we’ll let him get away with that one,” he added.

India End Day 1 at 204/6 After Mixed Performance

Despite Gill’s run-out, India managed to close the day at a fighting 204/6. Karun Nair remained unbeaten on 52, holding the innings together as wickets fell at regular intervals. While Gill missed the chance to surpass Sunil Gavaskar’s historic 774-run series tally, his 737 runs at an average over 90 continue to make this series a memorable one for him.
