Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has called on team management and captain Shubman Gill to support Mohammed Siraj as a future No.1 Test bowler. After Siraj’s match-winning spell in the fifth Test against England at The Oval, Ashwin praised the pacer for stepping up in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and leading India to a thrilling six-run win that helped level the series 2-2.
Siraj took nine wickets in the final match, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings, and finished the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with 23 wickets — the most by any bowler in the series. Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel, said it’s time India recognizes Siraj as a match-winner and builds the bowling attack around him.
Siraj’s Workload and Match Impact Recognized
Ashwin highlighted that Siraj bowled 187 overs in the series, more than any other bowler, showing his stamina, skill, and commitment. He urged coach Gautam Gambhir and Gill to manage Siraj’s workload smartly and rest him from less important matches to extend his career.
Siraj’s journey in the series was emotional. From a heartbreaking dismissal at Lord’s to dropping a crucial catch in the Oval Test, he bounced back with resilience. On Day 5, he took three of the last four wickets, including the final blow that sealed India’s win.
Ashwin emphasized that Siraj’s never-say-die attitude, work ethic, and passion make him a rare gem in Indian cricket. Calling him a once-in-a-generation player, Ashwin said Siraj has earned the trust of the cricketing gods and deserves to be celebrated not just for his skill but for his spirit.
