Bhuvneshwar defends Bumrah’s limited appearances

Bhuvneshwar Kumar backs Bumrah workload plan

India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has strongly defended Jasprit Bumrah amid ongoing debates over his workload management. Ahead of the 2025 Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy against England, the team management decided that Bumrah would play only three of the five Tests. This decision sparked mixed reactions from fans and former cricketers, but Bhuvneshwar believes it is crucial for the star bowler’s longevity.

Managing physical and mental demands

Speaking on the podcast Talk with Manvendra, Bhuvneshwar highlighted the physical and mental toll of playing across all formats. He noted that Bumrah’s unique bowling action naturally carries a higher injury risk, making careful match selection important. He also stressed that playing fewer games doesn’t mean reduced impact, as Bumrah can still deliver match-winning performances in selected fixtures.

Impact against England proves point

The decision to manage Bumrah’s workload paid off during the England series. In just three matches, he took 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, and played a decisive role in India’s 2-2 series draw. Bhuvneshwar pointed out that this showed the value of strategic rest, allowing Bumrah to perform at his best when needed most.

From promising debut to senior spearhead

Reflecting on Bumrah’s rise, Bhuvneshwar said his skills were evident from the very beginning. Over the years, experience and confidence have shaped him into India’s leading fast bowler. According to Bhuvneshwar, maturity has allowed Bumrah to stay composed even when things go wrong, making him a reliable asset in high-pressure situations.
