The five-match Test series between India and England, which ended in a 2-2 draw and marked Shubman Gill’s debut as Test captain, was renamed the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy. The change from the iconic Pataudi Trophy drew sharp criticism from fans and former cricketers, who viewed it as a slight to the legacy of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.
Ghavri blasts BCCI and Sachin Tendulkar
Former India great Karsan Ghavri voiced strong opposition, saying the BCCI should have stood firm against the MCC and ECB to preserve Pataudi’s name. He also took aim at Sachin Tendulkar for accepting the change without protest. Ghavri argued that Tendulkar should have refused the honour out of respect for the former Indian captain.
‘Gavaskar would have shaken India’
Drawing a parallel, Ghavri said if the Border–Gavaskar Trophy’s name was changed, Sunil Gavaskar would have raised a nationwide uproar. He emphasised that trophies named after cricketing legends should remain unchanged as a mark of respect.
‘Put your foot down’
Ghavri suggested Tendulkar should have told officials not to use his name for the series trophy and instead keep Pataudi’s legacy intact. He added that if recognition was necessary, medals could be named after Tendulkar and Anderson without altering the trophy name.
