Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan recently revealed details of his clashes with Pakistan legend Shahid Afridi. Speaking on a podcast, Pathan recalled a heated altercation with Afridi during India’s 2006 tour of Pakistan, when the latter allegedly started messing with his hair mid-flight. Pathan said Afridi used abusive language, prompting him to hit back strongly, even making a remark that silenced the Pakistan star.
Kaneria supports Pathan’s criticism
The comments quickly went viral, with former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria stepping in to support Pathan. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Kaneria said, “Irfan bhai, you’re absolutely right. He always resorts to personal attacks—be it on someone’s family or their religion. Class and decency clearly aren’t his strengths.”
Kaneria has long been critical of Afridi, accusing him of discriminatory behaviour during their time together in the Pakistan dressing room.
History of Kaneria vs Afridi feud
Kaneria has previously alleged that Afridi encouraged teammates to ostracise him because of his faith. He claimed some players refused to share meals with him. Afridi, however, denied the charges, accusing Kaneria of being a “liar” and seeking sympathy after his ban for spot-fixing in county cricket.
The rivalry between the two former teammates continues to resurface whenever Afridi’s conduct is discussed.
Afridi’s legacy under scrutiny
Despite Afridi’s illustrious career as an all-rounder and captain, controversies like these continue to affect his reputation. Pathan’s blunt remarks and Kaneria’s endorsement have reignited debates over Afridi’s behaviour on and off the field, overshadowing his cricketing achievements.
