Shubman Gill’s Return to the T20I Fold

After a hiatus from the T20I format, Shubman Gill‘s inclusion as vice-captain marks his return to the shortest format of the game. His recent performances, including a stellar 754 runs at an average of 75 in the five-match Test series against England, have bolstered his case for a spot in the T20I squad. Gill’s last T20I appearance was in July 2024, where he served as vice-captain against Sri Lanka. Selectors have emphasized his leadership qualities and consistency as key factors in his selection.

Exclusion of Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal

Notably, the squad announcement has sparked discussions due to the omission of Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Despite Iyer’s impressive performances, including leading Punjab Kings to the IPL final and being the top run-scorer in India’s Champions Trophy-winning campaign, he has been left out of the squad. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified that the decision was based on team balance, stating, “With regards to Shreyas, I mean, you need to tell him who he can replace. No fault of his, nor is it ours.”

Similarly, emerging talent Yashasvi Jaiswal has not made the cut, leading to debates about the selection criteria and the future of these players in the national setup.

Sanju Samson’s Position in the Squad

Sanju Samson‘s inclusion in the squad has raised questions regarding his role. With the return of Gill to the opening slot, Samson’s position in the playing XI appears uncertain. Selectors have indicated that his place in the team will depend on the team’s requirements and his adaptability to various roles within the squad.
