BCCI Extends Ajit Agarkar’s Contract as Chairman of Selectors Until 2026

Ajit Agarkar to Continue as BCCI Chief Selector Until 2026

The BCCI has handed a big vote of confidence to Ajit Agarkar, extending his contract as chairman of selectors until June 2026. The move highlights the board’s faith in his leadership during a crucial phase for Indian cricket, balancing success on the field with smooth generational transitions.

Agarkar’s Impact Since 2023

Ajit Agarkar took charge of the selection committee in June 2023 and has since overseen one of the most successful and transitional periods in recent Indian cricket. Under his guidance, India ended its long-standing drought at ICC events by clinching the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. The team also reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup on home soil, further solidifying his impact.

According to The Indian Express, the BCCI finalised the decision to extend his tenure months ago, even before the 2025 Indian Premier League. Officials have been impressed with his calm handling of big decisions, particularly at a time when Indian cricket is witnessing a generational shift.

Strategic Leadership Changes

Agarkar’s tenure has been marked by bold calls on leadership. The selectors handed the Test captaincy to Shubman Gill, a move that symbolises faith in the next generation. Similarly, Suryakumar Yadav was named T20I captain, adding a fresh approach to the shortest format.

Meanwhile, legends such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin have been phased into retirement plans. Kohli and Rohit now only feature in ODIs, while Ashwin has stepped away from all formats. These transitions, managed smoothly under Agarkar’s watch, have kept the team competitive while preparing for the future.

Upcoming Changes in the Selection Committee

The current selection panel includes SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra, S Sharath, and Agarkar. However, changes are expected at the upcoming BCCI annual general body meeting in September. Sharath, who earlier chaired the junior selection committee, is likely to be replaced as he approaches the four-year cap under BCCI norms. While Das and Banerjee’s futures are still undecided, officials are broadly satisfied with the current panel’s performance.

Women’s and Junior Panels to See Fresh Faces

Alongside the men’s selection committee, the BCCI will also invite applications for the senior women’s and junior men’s panels. Neetu David, Arati Vaidya, and Mithu Mukherjee from the women’s panel are set to complete their five-year terms this season. The junior panel, featuring Thilak Naidu, Ranadeb Bose, Harvinder Singh Sodhi, Pathik Patel, and Krishen Mohan, could also see changes ahead of a packed international calendar.
