Gill Cleaned Up in Training, Abhishek Sharma’s 25 Sixes Steal Spotlight as Samson Skips Nets

Gill Stumbles in Nets as Abhishek Steals Spotlight

After more than a year, Shubman Gill is set to return to T20 internationals when India open their Asia Cup 2025 campaign against the UAE at the Dubai International Stadium on Wednesday. Gill last played the format in July 2024 during the Sri Lanka tour, shortly after the T20 World Cup in the West Indies.

Named vice-captain for the tournament, Gill’s inclusion in the playing XI is confirmed. However, on the eve of the match, the India star endured a rare blemish.

According to PTI, Gill looked in sublime touch during the optional nets at the ICC Academy. He timed quick bowlers effortlessly, driving them over extra cover with trademark grace. But a local net bowler surprised him with a thunderbolt that uprooted his off-stump. It was a rare lapse in an otherwise fluent session.

Abhishek Sharma’s Big Hitting Display

Gill’s opening partner, Abhishek Sharma, sent a clear warning to Asia Cup opponents with a power-packed training show.

The report highlighted that Sharma “clobbered at least 25 to 30 sixes, making it nearly impossible for those watching to take their eyes off.” Importantly, he did not rely on brute power but showcased pure hand-eye coordination, launching deliveries far beyond the practice venue.

Sanju Samson Misses Out

With Gill back in the XI, Sanju Samson’s chances have reduced despite his strong Kerala Cricket League displays. Samson even batted at No. 6 there to prove his adaptability. Yet, India’s training sessions in Dubai suggested head coach Gautam Gambhir’s preference for Jitesh Sharma.

On Monday, Samson was not given a batting opportunity and appeared isolated at practice. Meanwhile, Jitesh exuded confidence with the bat and gloves, ready to shoulder finishing duties.

The RCB wicketkeeper continued on Wednesday, sharpening his reflexes under fielding coach T. Dilip. He practiced “no-look” catching drills, where he instinctively plucked balls inches above the turf without tracking their flight.

Senior Players Skip Nets

Several seniors, including Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, and Samson, skipped Wednesday’s training grind. The move was likely aimed at workload management before the high-stakes tournament opener.
