Sitanshu Kotak Speaks on Shubman Gill’s Workload and Captaincy Speculation

Sitanshu Kotak on Gill’s Workload and Future Captaincy Talks

Team India assistant coach Sitanshu Kotak addressed questions about Shubman Gill’s workload management and leadership future. Kotak clarified that the team management mainly focuses on workload for fast bowlers, not batsmen. He referred to Gill’s recent run of back-to-back matches across formats.

Shubman Gill has played continuously in 2025. He led India in a five-match Test series in England. Before that, he was part of India’s Champions Trophy-winning squad. Gill then featured in the IPL season with Gujarat Titans. After that, he joined the T20I squad for the Asia Cup. Next, he will return to lead India in the Test series against West Indies.

Kotak on Gill’s workload management

Despite Gill’s packed schedule, Sitanshu Kotak ruled out concerns over workload management for batsmen.

“I don’t know how you look at workload management, but generally we do it for bowlers, mainly fast bowlers. When it comes to batsmen, only if they mentally feel that cricket has become too much for them does it become a concern. In my view, workload management is actually meant for fast bowlers. For batsmen, I don’t think workload management is that much of an issue,” Kotak told the media.

Kotak emphasised that workload is monitored only if a batsman feels mentally fatigued.

Speculation on Gill’s captaincy future

The BCCI is reportedly considering Shubman Gill as India’s all-format captain in the future. Gill already leads the Test side and serves as vice-captain in white-ball formats. His rapid rise as a leader has fueled speculation about him becoming the long-term face of Indian cricket.

Kotak on Gill’s batting technique

Sitanshu Kotak also highlighted Gill’s adaptability across formats when asked about changes in his technique.

“Nowadays, whichever format a player takes up, they are very much aware of how to approach red-ball cricket and how to approach white-ball cricket. Even in white-ball, they know how to approach the powerplay and how to approach the death overs. Of course, there will be some technical adjustments, and these players are fully aware of what needs to be done. So, the players will definitely try to make those adjustments. Once white-ball practice begins, they start focusing on that, and when it’s red-ball practice, they shift their focus to how to approach red-ball cricket,” Kotak added.

Gill’s growing role in Indian cricket

With his consistent performances and leadership responsibilities, Shubman Gill remains at the center of India’s future planning. Kotak’s comments underline the team management’s confidence in his adaptability and resilience. While workload management is reserved for fast bowlers, Gill’s mental and physical readiness will be crucial as he continues to balance red-ball and white-ball duties.
