Glenn Maxwell is back in Victoria’s one-day squad for the Dean Jones Trophy. The veteran allrounder will use the 50-over format to sharpen his game before Australia’s T20I series against New Zealand.
The 36-year-old had stepped away from ODIs earlier this year but remains key in shorter formats. He will feature in Victoria’s opening two fixtures against Queensland and Tasmania at Allan Border Field on Wednesday and Friday. His last List A outing for Victoria came in October 2023 against New South Wales.
Matt Short Set for Long-Awaited Comeback
Matt Short has been cleared to play after recovering from a side strain. This will be his first competitive appearance since July’s Major League Cricket tournament. Short missed the West Indies series and both South Africa tours due to injury. He has not played a domestic 50-over game since the Champions Trophy.
Captaincy Shuffle and Squad Changes
Will Sutherland will lead Victoria in the opening match but departs afterward for Australia A duty in India. Peter Handscomb will captain the side in the second game.
Oliver Peake and Todd Murphy are unavailable as both are already playing with Australia A in Lucknow. Harry Dixon and Sam Elliott will play the first two matches before leaving for Australia A’s 50-over campaign in Kanpur.
Queensland will be captained by Marnus Labuschagne for games against Victoria and Western Australia. Usman Khawaja will sit out as he focuses on the upcoming Sheffield Shield season. Injuries to Mark Steketee and Callum Vidler, along with Xavier Bartlett’s Australia A duty, leave gaps in their bowling attack.
Allrounder Hayden Kerr, who moved from New South Wales, could make his Queensland debut. Hugh Weibgen, captain of Australia’s Under-19 World Cup winning side, is also in line for his first appearance. Left-hander Lachlan Hearne, who struck 107 off 91 earlier this year, has been rewarded with an Australia A call-up.
