Tilak Varma has already established himself as one of the Mumbai Indians‘ go-to batsmen in the batting department in just his second season. The five-time winners had a terrible IPL season in 2022, but the left-hander’s arrival was possibly the one bright spot. Varma amassed close to 400 runs in his inaugural IPL season, wowing everyone with his batting.
Varma has played pivotal roles in four of the five games he has played so far in the 2023 season, including a critical 17-ball 37 in Mumbai’s most recent victory over Hyderabad on Tuesday (April 18), a 14-run victory. Despite having a brilliant IPL debut and the potential to be a reliable number three, Varma has primarily been employed as a floater in the middle order. But he doesn’t seem the least bit bothered by it.
Tilak Verma spoke
“I’m always comfortable playing in any situation and have developed my game accordingly. I’ve also told the management that I can bat anywhere,” revealed Varma in the post-match press conference. “They are also confident of me and send me to bat in different situations. I’m confident of batting anywhere.”
Even though he has already scored a number of noteworthy runs in his limited career, Varma’s cameo on Tuesday was particularly memorable because it was his first IPL match at his home stadium in Hyderabad. For the local boy who once again rose to the occasion when Mumbai most needed him to, it was undoubtedly a momentous occasion.
“It’s always a dream to play at your home ground. To play, do well and then see your team win makes it all the more sweeter. I was very excited on the eve of the game and couldn’t really sleep well due to the nervousness. I’ve grown up playing here all these years and I’m glad that all the preparations came off well for me,” Verma said.
