There has been lots of debate about the batting position of Axar Patel. The Indian all-rounder has been in tremendous touch with the bat since the last year. Despite the misfiring batting lineup of Delhi Capitals, the batter has been sent lower down the order which have cost them games.
For Delhi Capitals, this season has been full of errors. The team that continues to finish last in the bottom table didn’t seem to have any luck with anything. Another illustration of it occurred on Tuesday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where Delhi’s top order was completely destroyed, falling five runs behind in the powerplay alone for just 28 runs. The final score, 130 for eight, was earned after much effort, but it was still well below average.
Delhi never quite managed to get off to the best start after choosing to bat first, a choice that to cricket analysts seemed perplexing in and of itself. With the new ball, Shami and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha worked flawlessly to take four wickets for only seven runs in three overs, leaving Delhi panting for air. The first pitch of the inning saw Phil Salt go down for a golden duck, David Warner was unfortunate to be run out, and the final three batters in the top order had trouble with Shami’s moving ball.
The legendary batsman Virender Sehwag furiously mocked Delhi’s dismal batting display, which was destroyed by Mohammed Shami’s magical new-ball session. After Delhi’s innings, Sehwag criticized the management by claiming that everyone wanted Axar Patel to bat at the front of the lineup and that while he did so, the difference he made to the score was minimal.
Sehwag said
“We all wanted Axar Patel to come in early to bat, so he did. Yes, he batted at the same position, but came in the fourth over. But while we expected that he would come early and score 60-70 runs, that didn’t happen because he too was under pressure as a lot of wickets had already fallen,” he said.
Sehwag balmed Priyam Garg for the run-out blunder with Warner, claiming that he should have given up his wicket in order to help Delhi reach a more respectable total.
“Priyam Garg should have sacrificed his wicket because Warner would have scored runs for Delhi, he is the batter in form, and would have taken Delhi to a respectable total. Delhi collapse as down to the poor shot selection. Warner was left unfortunate,” he said.
