Mumbai Indians’ decision to retire out Tilak Varma during a tense chase against Lucknow Super Giants has stirred controversy—not just among fans and experts, but seemingly within the team itself. India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, was seen visibly upset in the MI dugout, hinting at internal disagreement over the call.
What Happened?
While chasing a target of 204, Tilak and Suryakumar had stitched a 66-run partnership. However, Tilak struggled to accelerate, managing just 17 runs off 18 balls. After SKY’s dismissal, Mumbai needed 52 runs off 23 balls. Tilak added 8 runs from his next 5 deliveries before being retired out with one ball left in the 19th over. Mitchell Santner replaced him.
Hardik’s Justification
MI skipper Hardik Pandya defended the move, citing tactical necessity:
“We needed big hits and Tilak was struggling. Sometimes you try hard, but it just doesn’t happen. The decision explains itself.”
SKY’s Reaction
Despite Hardik’s explanation, Suryakumar’s reaction at the dugout told another story. He looked surprised and unhappy as the decision unfolded. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene was seen trying to explain the strategy to him, but SKY’s expression suggested he wasn’t convinced.
Even though Jayawardene later clarified it was a purely tactical decision made in the team’s interest, the optics of the moment pointed to a difference of opinion within the camp.
