With Chennai Super Kings (CSK) struggling at ninth place in the IPL 2025 points table, former India cricketer Robin Uthappa has shared a realistic warning — MS Dhoni’s captaincy won’t be enough to turn things around. Speaking after CSK’s fourth consecutive loss, Uthappa said the team needs more than leadership magic to fix the glaring issues in their squad.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Injury Adds to CSK’s Woes
CSK recently confirmed that opener Ruturaj Gaikwad is ruled out of IPL 2025 due to a hairline fracture in his elbow. In his absence, MS Dhoni has resumed captaincy duties for the remainder of the season.
Despite the fanfare surrounding Dhoni’s return, Uthappa cautioned against placing unrealistic expectations on the veteran.
“I don’t think him being captain is going to automatically turn the tide for CSK,” Uthappa said on JioHotstar.
“There are a lot of gaps in that side.”
Suggestions to Fix CSK’s Lineup
Uthappa emphasized the need to fill Gaikwad’s spot in the batting order. He suggested that Rahul Tripathi could step in at No. 3.
“You have Devon Conway, who showed some form with a 69* against Punjab before being retired out. Rachin Ravindra has been patchy, so Tripathi might be a good option at No. 3,” he added.
Uthappa also mentioned Sam Curran as a potential addition to the playing XI, especially now that an overseas slot has opened up with Gaikwad’s absence.
CSK vs KKR: A Must-Win Match
CSK now face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at their home ground — MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. With just two points on the table and a four-match losing streak, a win is crucial to stay alive in the playoff race.
‘Too Many Moving Pieces’
Calling CSK one of the most successful franchises, Uthappa said the current lineup has “too many moving pieces,” and even a tactical genius like Dhoni can only do so much without the right support from the squad.
Conclusion
While MS Dhoni’s return adds experience and hope, CSK’s real challenge lies in solving the structural gaps in the team — especially in the batting department. With crucial fixtures ahead, the team needs both strategic adjustments and player form to bounce back in IPL 2025.
