Danny Morrison Questions Ashwin’s Motivation as CSK Suffer Crushing Loss to KKR

Danny Morrison Questions Ashwin’s Drive Slams CSK Seniors

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) continue to face tough times in IPL 2025, with their latest defeat—a massive eight-wicket loss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)—raising serious questions about the motivation and form of senior players, especially Ravichandran Ashwin. The loss at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday was CSK’s fifth in six matches, keeping them at ninth place in the points table with just two points.

CSK’s Struggles Continue Despite Dhoni’s Return

MS Dhoni stepped in as captain once again after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to an elbow injury. However, the legendary skipper’s return hasn’t sparked a turnaround. Against KKR, CSK were bundled out for a meager 103/9 in 20 overs—a total easily chased by the visitors in just 10.1 overs.

Dhoni came out to bat at No. 9 and managed just 1 run, while Vijay Shankar was CSK’s top scorer with 29.

Danny Morrison Raises Ashwin Motivation Concerns

Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s ‘TimeOut’ show, former New Zealand fast bowler Danny Morrison voiced concerns about whether CSK’s senior players are still driven to perform at the highest level.

“Is it too much of a love affair with the old guys? How motivated are they?” Morrison asked.

“Ravichandran Ashwin has finished internationally. He’s a spinner, and they usually last long. But is he still hungry to compete?”

Ashwin’s performances so far in IPL 2025 have been underwhelming. The veteran spinner has taken just five wickets in six matches and has struggled with his economy rate. Against KKR, Sunil Narine took him on, exposing Ashwin’s current form.

‘Don’t Take the Piss Out of Cricket’

Morrison didn’t hold back when assessing Ashwin’s recent form and CSK’s overall performance, saying:

“Don’t take the piss out of cricket. It’ll come back to bite you.”

The comment reflects growing frustration from fans and pundits alike about CSK’s continued reliance on aging players despite repeated underperformance.

What’s Next for CSK?

With just two points and a plummeting net run rate, CSK’s playoff hopes are hanging by a thread. The team will need a major shift in approach, both tactically and mentally, to bounce back in the second half of the season.

Whether that includes changes in the playing XI or a renewed focus on youth and intent remains to be seen—but for now, the pressure is firmly on the veterans to deliver.
