In a bold tactical move that paid off, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni dropped star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin from the playing XI for the IPL 2025 match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 14. The decision came after CSK endured a five-match losing streak—its longest ever in IPL history.
Dhoni Explains Ashwin’s Omission
Speaking after the match, Dhoni clarified that Ashwin was under too much pressure due to his frequent usage in the powerplay overs.
“We were putting too much pressure on Ash. He was bowling two overs in the first six. We made changes and this looks like a better attack,” Dhoni said during the post-match presentation.
Ashwin’s Underwhelming Stats in IPL 2025
Ravichandran Ashwin’s numbers this season haven’t quite lived up to expectations:
- Matches: 6
- Wickets: 5
- Economy Rate: 9.90
- Bowling Average: 39.60
Despite being bought for ₹9.75 crore in the mega auction, Ashwin has struggled to make an impact. With the bat, he scored just 11 runs against RCB and 1 run against KKR, batting ahead of MS Dhoni.
Newcomers Shine as CSK Ends Losing Streak
In place of Ashwin, CSK brought in debutant Shaik Rasheed, while Jamie Overton replaced Devon Conway. While Overton had a quiet outing, Rasheed gave CSK a flying start, scoring 27 off 19 balls, including six boundaries.
Dhoni praised the youngster for his fearless intent and authentic stroke play.
“He has been with us for a few years and is batting well in the nets. It’s just the start. He can dominate with authentic shots,” Dhoni added.
What This Means for CSK
The revamped playing XI helped CSK snap their losing streak and get their second win of the season. With Ashwin on the bench, it remains to be seen if the spin veteran will find a place in the upcoming matches.
