Shoaib Akhtar Hits Back at Mohammad Hafeez for Criticising 90s Cricketers’ Legacy

Akhtar Slams Hafeez Over '90s Legacy' Comment

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has hit back strongly at Mohammad Hafeez for his controversial remarks about the legacy of Pakistan’s 1990s cricket legends. The war of words began during the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, where Hafeez, on a panel discussion with Akhtar, claimed that Pakistan’s 90s stars failed to leave behind a winning legacy due to their inability to clinch an ICC title.

What Hafeez Said

Mohammad Hafeez pointed out that while players like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Inzamam-ul-Haq were megastars, they didn’t win any ICC tournaments in the 90s. Despite reaching the 1999 World Cup final, Pakistan failed to secure a trophy during that era.

“I admire the cricketers of the 90s, but the fact is they didn’t bring home an ICC trophy,” Hafeez said. “It’s hard to talk about legacy without major titles.”

His remarks sparked outrage among fans and cricketing figures alike. Former players like Waqar Younis appeared to respond subtly on social media by posting a photo with Wasim Akram, flaunting their stellar bowling records.

Shoaib Akhtar’s Fiery Response

Initially reserved during the Champions Trophy panel, Shoaib Akhtar didn’t let the comment slide for long. Speaking during a PSL 2025 post-match show, The Dugout, Akhtar lashed out at Hafeez:

“Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis won us dozens of matches—at least 60 together in my time alone,” Akhtar said.
“That guy is telling Wasim bhai and Waqar bhai that they left no legacy? Then who did? You?”

Akhtar also reminded viewers that Pakistan had beaten India in over 70 ODIs during the 90s—an era still fondly remembered by many Pakistani fans.

A Legacy Beyond Titles?

While Hafeez’s comments highlight the importance of ICC trophies, Akhtar’s response emphasized the overall impact and match-winning contributions of the 90s legends. Players like Akram and Waqar not only dominated global cricket with their skills but also inspired generations of Pakistani pacers.

As debates over legacy, titles, and individual brilliance continue, one thing is clear—Pakistan’s cricketing history is rich with unforgettable moments, regardless of silverware.
