Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson has provided a fitness update after he was forced to retire hurt during the IPL 2025 clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday. The thrilling encounter went into the first Super Over of the season, where Delhi edged past Rajasthan to claim a dramatic victory.
Samson Injured Mid-Innings
Samson looked in fine touch, smashing 31 off just 19 balls with three sixes and two fours. However, in the sixth over of RR’s innings, he experienced discomfort in his rib cage after facing a delivery from DC’s Vipraj Nigam and had to leave the field.
“It feels alright (his injury). I wasn’t ready to come back and bat. It feels alright now. We will observe it tomorrow and see how it is,” Samson said during the post-match presentation.
Starc’s Final Over Heroics
Chasing a modest target, Rajasthan needed just 9 runs from the final over. But Delhi Capitals’ Mitchell Starc delivered a stunning final over under pressure, conceding only eight runs and forcing a Super Over. He was equally effective in the Super Over, limiting RR to 11 runs.
DC chased the target in just four deliveries, with KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs sealing the deal.
Samson Praises Bowlers and Team Effort
Despite the loss, Samson applauded the overall team performance, particularly highlighting the energy and discipline shown in the field.
“We bowled well. There were phases when they came hard at us. I would like to give credit to our bowlers and fielders. The energy on the ground was fantastic,” he said.
On the match situation, he added, “I thought that score was chaseable given the batting lineup we had and the start we got in the Powerplay.”
Special Mention for Sandeep Sharma
Samson also praised Sandeep Sharma, who bowled the Super Over for RR.
“I think Sandeep has been bowling the toughest overs for us in the last few years. Starcy just took it away in the end,” he admitted.
While RR missed the opportunity to turn things around in the tournament, Samson remains hopeful as they monitor his injury ahead of the upcoming fixtures.
