Mitchell Starc Challenges Saliva Use Myth After IPL Super Over Win

Mitchell Starc Disagrees with Shami on Saliva Use in IPL 2025

In a thrilling IPL 2025 encounter, Delhi Capitals (DC) edged out Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a Super Over thriller, securing their fifth victory of the season. One of the key moments came from Australia’s pace ace, Mitchell Starc, who played a pivotal role in DC’s victory.

After the match, Starc was asked about the ongoing debate surrounding the use of saliva on the cricket ball, a topic that has gained attention after the International Cricket Council (ICC) lifted the saliva ban during IPL 2025. While many bowlers have advocated for the use of saliva to shine the ball, Starc took a different stance.

“I don’t use it. I think it’s a myth,” said Starc during his post-match interview with Star Sports. “Some people think they swear by it. I don’t know what the difference is with sweat and saliva. I don’t reckon it makes a difference. It can make a difference on the red ball, but not the white ball.”

This comment comes after India’s Mohammed Shami expressed concerns over the loss of reverse swing, pleading with cricket regulators to reconsider the saliva ban. Starc, however, disagreed, stating that sweat does just as good a job as saliva, particularly in white-ball cricket.

Starc’s magic with the ball was on full display during his match-winning performance against RR. After Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Rana set a strong foundation, RR needed nine runs from six balls. Starc bowled a tight over, conceding only eight runs, forcing the game into a Super Over. In the Super Over, Starc only allowed 11 runs, and DC managed to chase the target in just four deliveries, sealing the victory.

Following their nail-biting win, DC now sits at the top of the IPL 2025 points table. They will next face Gujarat Titans on April 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
