Former Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas has openly questioned Babar Azam’s continued struggle with form, suggesting that the star batter may be reluctant to seek advice. Speaking to Cricket Pakistan, Abbas remarked that Babar’s inability to return to form could be due to either an ego issue or shyness that’s stopping him from reaching out to seniors for help.
“Either Babar has an ego issue or he is too shy to seek advice from his seniors in overcoming his current situation,” Abbas stated.
Babar Azam’s Ongoing Struggles
Since scoring 151 against Nepal in August 2023, Babar Azam has not registered a century for Pakistan. His recent performances in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) have also raised concerns, with scores of 0 and 1 in his first two innings for Peshawar Zalmi.
Zaheer Abbas also shared a story from the past to highlight the importance of mentorship. He recalled how Indian legend Mohammad Azharuddin had once approached him during the 1989-90 tour of Pakistan for help in fixing his batting grip. According to Abbas, the adjustment helped Azharuddin regain his form and confidence.
Commenting on Babar’s technique, Abbas added, “Babar is rushing his shots and isn’t adjusting at the crease, which shows a clear technical flaw under pressure.”
Rashid Latif Calls for Better Mentorship
Former wicketkeeper and Pakistan captain Rashid Latif echoed similar sentiments. He believes the absence of a strong batting coach or mentor is hurting Babar’s progress.
“When you’re under pressure, you need someone to guide you through it. Sadly, there’s no proper batting coach or mentor in the team right now,” Latif explained.
Conclusion
As pressure mounts on Babar Azam, both Zaheer Abbas and Rashid Latif believe the solution lies in seeking guidance and improving technical flaws. Whether it’s ego, a lack of mentorship, or tactical errors, Babar will need to adapt soon to reclaim his top form—especially with Pakistan’s future campaigns on the horizon.
