Gujarat Titans Sign Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka as Replacement for Glenn Phillips in IPL 2025

Gujarat Titans Sign Dasun Shanaka for IPL 2025

In a strategic move ahead of the ongoing IPL 2025 season, Gujarat Titans have signed Sri Lankan all-rounder, Dasun Shanaka, as a replacement for the injured Glenn Phillips. The right-handed batter was bought for INR 75 lakh and will bolster Gujarat’s squad for the remainder of the season.

A Familiar Face for Gujarat Titans

Shanaka, who was part of Gujarat Titans’ squad in IPL 2023, will be hoping to make a stronger impact this season. During his stint in the 2023 season, Shanaka played three matches but managed to score just 26 runs. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the chance to showcase his skills with the ball in hand.

A Proven Performer in International Cricket

Dasun Shanaka has an impressive record in T20 internationals. He has accumulated 1456 runs in 102 T20I matches for Sri Lanka, accompanied by 33 wickets. Apart from his T20I experience, Shanaka has also represented Sri Lanka in 71 ODIs and 6 Tests. His all-round abilities make him a valuable asset to the Gujarat Titans, as he can contribute both with the bat and the ball.

Replacement for Injured Glenn Phillips

The decision to bring in Shanaka comes after Glenn Phillips suffered a groin injury during Gujarat Titans’ IPL 2025 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Phillips, who had been a key player for the team, has now been ruled out for the rest of the season. The New Zealand all-rounder has already returned to his home country for treatment.

Earlier in the tournament, Gujarat Titans had to cope with the departure of Kagiso Rabada, who left India for personal reasons. It is still unclear whether the South African speedster will return for the remainder of the tournament. No replacement has been named for Rabada yet, with the franchise hopeful that he will rejoin the squad at a later stage.

Gujarat Titans’ Performance So Far

Despite the setbacks, Gujarat Titans have managed to perform well in IPL 2025. With four wins out of six matches, they are currently sitting in second place in the points table. The team will be looking to continue their strong run in the tournament and are preparing for their next match against Delhi Capitals on April 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

In their previous match, Gujarat Titans suffered a loss to Lucknow Super Giants. Despite posting a competitive total of 181 runs, Gujarat was unable to defend the target as Rishabh Pant’s side chased it down with six wickets in hand and three balls to spare.

Standout Performers for Gujarat Titans

So far, Sai Sudharsan and Mohammed Siraj have been standout performers for Gujarat Titans. Sudharsan is currently second in the Orange Cap leaderboard with 329 runs in six matches, while Siraj has been excellent with the ball, taking 10 wickets in the same number of games.

With the addition of Dasun Shanaka, Gujarat Titans will look to bounce back strongly in their next match and make a push for the top spot in the points table.
