Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson is uncertain to play in their crucial IPL 2025 match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Saturday. Samson, who retired hurt on 31 during RR’s last match against Delhi Capitals, experienced pain in his abdominal area. The team is currently awaiting scan results to assess the severity of the injury.
“Sanju experienced a bit of pain in the abdominal area. We’ve sent him for scans and will decide once we know more,” said RR head coach Rahul Dravid during a press briefing.
Samson had returned to lead RR after recovering from a thumb injury earlier in the season. In his absence during the first three games, Riyan Parag had captained the side. If Samson is ruled out, Parag is expected to step in again as captain.
RR’s Form and Injury Woes Continue
RR’s campaign has been marred by inconsistency and key player exits. The team lost experienced names like Jos Buttler, R Ashwin, and Yuzvendra Chahal in the mega auction, prompting a reshuffle of the squad. Despite early promise, RR are currently placed eighth on the points table with just two wins.
Dravid acknowledged the challenges but showed confidence in the squad. “We’ve picked a strong team. Players like Hasaranga and Theekshana are proven T20 performers globally,” he said.
Death Bowling Concerns Persist
Dravid also admitted RR’s death bowling has been a major issue. The team conceded 77 and 72 runs respectively in the last five overs of their previous two games.
“It’s not about planning — it’s an execution issue,” said Dravid. “Even 57–60 runs in the last five overs is acceptable these days, but we’re going beyond that, and we need to fix it.”
Super Over Decisions and Team Strategy
The head coach defended his and Samson’s decision to use Sandeep Sharma over Jofra Archer in the Super Over against DC. Sharma has bowled in high-pressure situations for RR this season and was backed by the team management.
“Every decision may not work out, but we trust Sandeep’s skills and felt he was best suited for that moment,” Dravid added.
With Samson’s availability hanging in the balance and playoffs hopes dwindling, RR will be under pressure when they face LSG. The team hopes to bounce back with a strong performance in Jaipur on Saturday.
