Mohammad Amir, the former Pakistan pacer, has dropped a bombshell regarding his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL), stating that he is nearing a chance to play in IPL 2026. Despite the strained diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan, Amir’s statement regarding his IPL participation has grabbed the cricketing world’s attention.
Amir’s Strong IPL Desire
Speaking in an interview with Geo News, Amir expressed his keen interest in playing in the IPL, confirming that if given the opportunity, he would choose the IPL over the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The veteran pacer, who is currently playing for Quetta Gladiators in PSL 2025, mentioned that his participation in IPL 2026 was something he was working towards.
“Honestly, if I get the opportunity, I’ll definitely play in the IPL. I’m saying this openly. But if I don’t get a chance, then I will play in the PSL,” Amir said. He also confirmed that by next year, he expects to be part of the IPL.
The Possible Clash Between IPL and PSL
Amir’s statement comes at a time when the IPL 2025 and PSL 2025 seasons are in full swing. A significant challenge, according to Amir, is the potential clash between the two leagues. If a scheduling conflict arises, Amir would be forced to choose between the two tournaments. He clarified, “If I get picked in IPL first, then I can’t pull out. If I get picked in PSL first, I can’t pull out either.”
This situation is further complicated by the fact that the dates of the two leagues often overlap. Amir, however, remains optimistic about the chance of the leagues not clashing in the future. He mentioned that this year, the ICC Champions Trophy took precedence, but he is hopeful for a smoother calendar next year.
Will Diplomatic Tensions Affect Amir’s IPL Dream?
Despite Amir’s optimistic outlook, his participation in the IPL remains uncertain due to political tensions between India and Pakistan. Following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of over 26 Indians, relations between the two nations have worsened. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made it clear that there will be no bilateral cricket series between the countries in the near future.
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla also emphasized that Pakistani players would likely continue to be excluded from IPL tournaments. This makes Amir’s IPL aspirations seem unlikely, at least in the immediate future.
