Ambati Rayudu Reveals Mumbai Indians’ Team Talks on How to Handle Sunil Narine

Rayudu Reveals MI's Strategy Against Sunil Narine

Sunil Narine’s brilliance in the IPL 2025 was on full display once again as he turned the match in Kolkata Knight Riders’ favor against Delhi Capitals with a game-changing spell. Former India batter Ambati Rayudu, who played eight IPL seasons for Mumbai Indians (MI), recently revealed that MI had no solution to counter Narine, and their team strategy was simply to “see him off.”

“We have had team meetings on how to tackle Narine… leading up to us deciding ‘No, let’s put the shutters down, see him off. There’s no way we are getting to him’.”

Narine has taken 31 wickets in 26 matches against MI, with a miserly economy rate of 6.65 — making him one of the most effective bowlers against the five-time champions.

Narine Turns the Game for KKR Against DC

In the recent match against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, KKR were under pressure as DC stood at 130/3, needing 75 runs off 42 balls with Axar Patel and Faf du Plessis at the crease. Acting as KKR’s stand-in captain in place of the injured Ajinkya Rahane, Narine brought himself on and changed the game completely.

He dismissed Axar Patel and Tristian Stubbs in a single over, then returned to remove du Plessis in his next over, triggering a collapse that derailed DC’s chase.

Narine’s Legacy: “A Bowler Who Dismantles Batting Lineups”

Rayudu praised Narine’s consistent ability to dominate in the middle overs, stating:

“He completely dismantles the opposition’s batting… Very few bowlers have had that power over any batting unit in the middle overs.”

He credited KKR’s retention of Narine to this unmatched skillset and highlighted his calmness and control under pressure.

Former West Indies opener Daren Ganga, who played alongside a young Narine in Trinidad, added that Narine builds pressure regardless of wickets:

“Even if he’s not taking wickets, he always creates pressure from the other end. Narine is real money in T20 cricket.”
