IPL 2025: Daniel Vettori Explains What Went Wrong for Sunrisers Hyderabad After Playoff Exit

Vettori Breaks Silence on SRH’s IPL 2025 Failure

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori has revealed key reasons behind the team’s disappointing IPL 2025 season. After a rain-affected match against Delhi Capitals ended their playoff hopes, Vettori explained that tough pitch conditions and inconsistent performances led to SRH’s early exit.

“We haven’t been consistent enough,” Vettori admitted in the post-match press conference. “This season was all about assessing the conditions, but the pitches in Hyderabad weren’t what we expected. Only two surfaces allowed 250-plus totals, while others were more helpful to fast bowlers.”

Hyderabad Pitches Not Batter-Friendly in 2025

Unlike IPL 2024, where Hyderabad saw multiple high-scoring games, this year’s surfaces were more challenging for batters. Out of 11 innings in six home games, teams crossed 200 only four times. Vettori pointed out that the new ball didn’t come onto the bat easily, making strokeplay difficult.

“There were four surfaces that suited pacers more than spinners,” he said. “The new ball offered movement, and bowlers exploited it well. That changed the way we had to approach games.”

Rain Washes Away SRH’s Last Playoff Hope

Against Delhi Capitals, SRH looked set for a strong win after reducing DC to 133/7. Skipper Pat Cummins led the attack brilliantly, taking 3/19. However, heavy rain washed out the second innings, denying SRH the chance to add two crucial points.

“It’s frustrating,” Vettori said. “Today was finally shaping into a complete performance. But that’s cricket. You can’t control the weather.”

Shami Benched, Cummins Steps Up With the Ball

Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami was dropped due to his poor form—only six wickets in nine games at an economy of 11.23. Vettori explained the decision was based on pitch conditions, and praised Pat Cummins’ ability to lead and adapt.

“Cummins showed why he’s a world-class bowler. He took the first over and struck immediately,” the coach noted. Cummins has now taken 13 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 27.92.

Points Table Update

  • DC: 5th place with 13 points (6 wins, 4 losses, 1 no result)
  • SRH: 8th place with 7 points (3 wins, 7 losses, 1 no result)

With only three matches left in the season, SRH are officially out of the playoff race, while Delhi Capitals continue to fight for a top-four spot.
