Matthew Mott has been appointed as the head coach of Sydney Sixers’ WBBL team, replacing Charlotte Edwards, who stepped down last month to become England women’s head coach. Mott has signed a two-year contract and will also continue as assistant coach to Greg Shipperd for the Sydney Sixers men’s team in the BBL.
This move marks Mott’s return to the women’s game, three-and-a-half years after a highly successful stint with the Australia Women’s national team, during which he led them to two T20 World Cup titles (2018, 2020) and the ODI World Cup in 2022.
A Familiar Face with Strong Sixers Links
Mott, 51, expressed enthusiasm about rejoining the women’s cricket circuit:
“I’m absolutely delighted to be working with the Sixers women’s team. I’ve had a strong connection with the club over many years, so when the opportunity came up, it was one I was really keen to take on.”
He previously coached Cricket New South Wales men’s team between 2007 and 2011 and has coached several players currently in the Sixers’ WBBL squad.
Sixers Aim to End Title Drought
The Sydney Sixers WBBL team, once dominant, have not won a title since the 2017–18 season. They finished sixth last season, missing the playoffs. General manager Rachael Haynes cited Mott’s experience and winning mentality as key factors in the appointment:
“Matt brings a world-class approach and has a proven ability to build a strong, winning culture.”
Franchise Circuit and Draft Strategy
Mott is currently serving as an assistant coach at IPL franchise Delhi Capitals and is set to coach Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket later this year. Both teams are co-owned by GMR Group, indicating Mott’s deepening ties to the global franchise scene.
Looking ahead to the WBBL overseas draft, Mott said:
“The list is already stacked with talent. We’re looking to build on that and put ourselves in a position to bring home a championship again this season.”
The Sixers hold the first pick in the upcoming WBBL draft, giving Mott a strong opportunity to shape a title-contending squad.
