India Set to Bid for Hosting 2027 WTC Final, But Pakistan Angle Looms

India Eyes Hosting WTC 2027 Final Amid Pak Tensions

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly planning to host the World Test Championship (WTC) final of the 2025–27 cycle. If the plan is approved, this will be the first time the WTC final is held in India, after England hosted the first two finals in 2021 (Southampton) and 2023 (The Oval).

According to reports, early discussions took place during the ICC Chief Executives Committee meeting held in Zimbabwe last month. The meeting was attended by IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal, representing the BCCI. The current ICC Chairman is Jay Shah, who assumed the role in December 2024, succeeding Greg Barclay.

“If India reaches the WTC final, it will be a huge event for fans. Even without India, a top clash will still draw a large audience,” said a source close to the development.

The ‘Pakistan’ Dilemma

One major concern remains: What happens if India and Pakistan both qualify for the WTC final?

Due to ongoing political tensions and lack of bilateral cricket ties, such a scenario could pose a serious logistical and diplomatic challenge. While both teams competing in a WTC final would guarantee record viewership, hosting it in India might become controversial.

“That situation will be dealt with if and when it arises,” sources added.

IPL 2025 Suspended for One Week Amid Border Conflict

This news comes just days after the BCCI suspended IPL 2025 for one week, following rising military tensions between India and Pakistan. The Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala was abandoned midway due to air raid alerts in nearby cities including Jammu and Pathankot.

In a statement, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said:

“The BCCI has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing IPL with immediate effect for one week. The safety of the nation comes first.”

The tournament had 16 matches left — 12 league games and 4 playoffs — originally scheduled to conclude on May 25 in Kolkata. A possible window in September is being considered, especially if the Asia Cup 2025 is canceled due to regional instability.

WTC 2027: Why India as Host Makes Sense

  • Massive local fan base for Test cricket, especially if India qualifies
  • Boosts India’s global cricket hosting reputation under Jay Shah’s ICC leadership
  • Commercially lucrative for the ICC and sponsors
  • Strong infrastructure with multiple venues suited for a marquee event

What’s Next?

  • BCCI is expected to formalize the WTC 2027 final bid later this year
  • Venue selection will depend on political and security dynamics
  • If India and Pakistan reach the final, ICC may need a neutral venue backup plan
