Gavaskar Casts Doubt on Kohli and Rohit’s 2027 ODI WC Hopes

Gavaskar Doubts Kohli, Rohit Will Play 2027 WC

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has given a blunt verdict on the ODI future of Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Despite both players expressing a strong desire to compete in the 2027 ODI World Cup, Gavaskar believes their chances are slim due to age and long-term team planning.

Kohli and Rohit Aim for One Last Shot

Following their recent retirements from Test cricket, both Kohli and Rohit have committed to continuing in the 50-over format. The duo was instrumental in India’s recent Champions Trophy win — Kohli with match-winning innings against Pakistan and Australia, and Rohit shining in the final versus New Zealand.

Both have publicly expressed their ambition to lift the 2027 World Cup, potentially marking a final flourish in their stellar careers.

Gavaskar’s Bold Take on Their Future

Speaking on Sports Today, Gavaskar acknowledged their tremendous ODI contributions but pointed out that selectors will have to assess whether the duo can maintain their form and fitness until 2027.

“The selection committee will be looking at the 2027 World Cup… and if they think they can still contribute, they’ll be picked,” Gavaskar said.

However, he didn’t mince words in sharing his personal opinion:

“No, I don’t think they will be playing. I’m being very honest.”

Yet, he left room for surprises, adding,

“But if they keep scoring hundreds and hundreds, even God can’t drop them.”

Their Legacy in Numbers

As India looks to the future with younger stars stepping in, the next couple of years will determine whether two of India’s greatest ever white-ball players can defy the odds and extend their legacy to 2027.
