Kusal Mendis to Replace Jos Buttler in Gujarat Titans Squad for IPL 2025 Playoffs

Kusal Mendis Replaces Buttler at GT for IPL 2025 Playoffs

Gujarat Titans (GT) have roped in Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis as a replacement for Jos Buttler ahead of the IPL 2025 playoffs. Mendis, who recently featured in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for Quetta Gladiators, is now set to make his debut appearance in the IPL.

Why Jos Buttler Is Unavailable

Buttler will miss the IPL playoffs due to his inclusion in England’s ODI squad for the upcoming home series against West Indies, which begins on May 29—the same day as the IPL 2025 playoffs.

Kusal Mendis’ Current Form

Mendis has been in explosive touch in the PSL, scoring 143 runs at a strike rate of 168 in just five matches. His performances caught the attention of Gujarat’s management, especially with Buttler’s sudden exit.

Notably, Mendis has never played in the IPL before, despite putting his name forward in multiple auctions.

He is currently awaiting his visa clearance for India and is expected to join the GT camp by Saturday.

GT’s Playoff Push

GT are tied at the top of the IPL 2025 points table alongside Royal Challengers Bengaluru, but enjoy a superior net run rate. They are one win away from officially sealing their spot in the playoffs.

While GT have Anuj Rawat and Kumar Kushagra as backup wicketkeeping options, Mendis adds a potent top-order batting option and depth behind the stumps.
