England captain Ben Stokes has expressed full confidence in resuming his all-round duties as he prepares to lead England in their upcoming four-day Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, starting May 22. The game marks the beginning of a crucial Test summer that also includes a five-match series against India.
Back from Injury, Ready to Fire
Stokes had been sidelined since December 2024, after tearing his left hamstring during the final Test in New Zealand. He underwent surgery in January 2025 and has since undergone intensive rehab. Speaking to Sky Sports, Stokes confirmed his return to full fitness.
“As excited as I am to get back on the field, I know it’s going to be different to training. But I want to be that full seamer, batting at six, trying to dominate every situation,” he said.
Stokes emphasized that while training helps, nothing matches the physical demands of a live match, especially in the Test format.
In Peak Physical Shape
The 33-year-old all-rounder, who had also suffered an injury in the same region during The Hundred last August, insisted he is now in the best physical shape of his career.
“I’ve worked incredibly hard on all aspects of everything – cricket and fitness. I’m coming back fitter than before,” Stokes added.
Strategic Talks with McCullum
Stokes also revealed that he’s been in ongoing discussions with head coach Brendon McCullum on managing his workload and staying effective across formats.
“I talk to Baz a lot. We’ve had very good conversations over the past couple of months about how to manage my role better,” said Stokes.
