Akash Chopra puzzled with Samson's decision to bat first at the Wankhede

When Rajasthan Royals (RR) hosted CSK in their backyard earlier this season, the wicketkeeper-batter, who also serves as the team’s captain, only managed to score 17 off 17 balls. The Rajasthan captain continued his underwhelming performance from the previous match between RR and Mumbai Indians (MI), scoring just 14 runs off of 10 balls as the record-breaking champions defeated the Men in Pink on Sunday by a score of six wickets.

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra expressed his opinions over the recently finished IPL 2023 match between RR and MI on YouTube, criticizing Samson for failing to motivate the 2008 champions at the Wankhede Stadium.

Akash Chopra said

“Rajasthan is facing another trouble. Jos Buttler is not firing, as he usually does, this year. The start was very good but he has gone slightly down. Sanju Samson hasn’t scored runs at all,” Chopra said.

In 9 games in the lucrative league, Samson has scored 212 runs for the 2008 champions, averaging 23.56. Jos Buttler, the RR opener, also played a forgettable 18 off 19 against the Mumbai Indians. In a game where Buttler and Samson struggled for RR, Yashasvi Jaiswal, the opener, broke numerous records with his first IPL century. Jaiswal’s performance was in vain, though, as RR lost the game by a score of 6 wickets.

“So as good a team as they are, because they have (Shimron) Hetmyer, Dhruv Jurel, and Devdutt Padikkal as well, the team is good, but two main players not scoring runs, that’s a problem,” Chopra observed.

Chopra, a former player for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), was also annoyed with Samson’s decision to bat first at Wankhede.

“It was amazing that Rajasthan chose to bat after winning the toss. You don’t do that in Mumbai. You want to chase in Mumbai because dew comes later and it is a chase-friendly ground, although Punjab won while batting first in the last game, but they didn’t win the toss,” he concluded.
