AB de Villiers Backs Bavuma to Lead with the Bat in WTC Final

AB de Villiers Urges Bavuma to Lead in WTC Final

Former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers has called on Temba Bavuma to lead from the front with the bat in the upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia, set to be played at Lord’s in June. South Africa will be appearing in their first-ever WTC Final, while Australia aims to defend their title.

Bavuma and Verreynne Key to South Africa’s Batting

In a video shared by the ICC, De Villiers highlighted the critical role Bavuma will play as both a leader and batter. He also pointed to Kyle Verreynne’s ability to manage the lower order and add crucial runs.

“Temba, as captain, should lead from the front. At Lord’s, getting runs on the board is vital to give your bowlers freedom,” De Villiers said.

He emphasized how Verreynne’s presence at the crease with the tail could help South Africa gain an extra 80–100 runs, which can often be the difference in Test match outcomes at Lord’s.

Proteas Enter Final After Strong WTC Cycle

South Africa topped the WTC league table with a points percentage of 69.44. They dominated at home with series wins against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and drew a hard-fought series against India. Their away form was equally impressive, notching victories over West Indies and Bangladesh, with their only series loss coming in New Zealand due to player unavailability.

The team won 8 of their 12 matches and drew one, securing their first-ever place in a WTC Final.

Australia Set to Defend WTC Title

Australia, with a points percentage of 67.54, finished second in the standings. They drew the Ashes in England, whitewashed Pakistan 3–0 at home, and defeated New Zealand and Sri Lanka. A series draw against West Indies and a landmark home series win over India helped them clinch their place in the final.

As South Africa prepares for the historic clash, De Villiers’ advice highlights the importance of leadership and lower-order contributions — key factors if the Proteas are to upset the reigning champions at Lord’s.
