Abhishek Nayar Returns to KKR After Exit from India Coaching Staff

Abhishek Nayar Returns to KKR as Assistant Coach

Former India batting coach Abhishek Nayar has officially returned to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as an assistant coach for the remainder of IPL 2025. His return follows his exit from the Indian national team’s coaching setup after India’s disappointing 3-1 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

India’s Batting Collapse Led to Nayar’s Departure

India started the Border-Gavaskar series strong but failed to maintain momentum, with batting failures contributing to a 3-1 loss in Australia. Following a review, the BCCI decided to make changes in the coaching staff, including parting ways with Nayar. While no formal announcement was made by the board, his return to KKR confirms the move.

Nayar Reunites with Familiar Faces at KKR

Nayar rejoins KKR, where he previously served during the 2023 and 2024 IPL seasons. His strong rapport with players and significant role in developing KKR’s Indian talent pool made him a natural choice for the franchise. With Gautam Gambhir focused on national coaching duties, Nayar steps back into a crucial role under head coach Chandrakant Pandit.

BCCI Begins Search for New Batting Coach

The BCCI has begun its search for a replacement batting coach ahead of the upcoming Zimbabwe tour in May. Front-runners for the role include Vikram Rathour, Wasim Jaffer, and Hrishikesh Kanitkar. The board aims to finalize the new coach before the five-match T20I series.

KKR Confirms Appointment on Social Media

KKR officially welcomed Nayar back with a post from Eden Gardens. CEO Venky Mysore said, “Abhishek has been a key part of our system. He understands our culture and connects well with the players.” With four wins in seven matches, KKR will be hoping that Nayar’s return adds momentum to their push for a third IPL title in 2025.
