Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane was left stunned after learning about Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket. The news broke during KKR’s IPL 2025 clash against CSK, catching Rahane completely off guard.
“I Will Call Him”: Rahane’s First Reaction
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Rahane responded with surprise.
“Oh, is it?” he said when informed. “I didn’t know. I’m actually shocked. I was playing a game, so I wasn’t aware. But I just want to wish him the best.”
The Mumbai duo have shared the dressing room for years across formats. Rahane praised Rohit’s growth as a red-ball player, especially his move from middle order to opening.
“The way he adapted was amazing. He always looked to take on bowlers and play with freedom – that’s something he wanted others to do as well,” Rahane added.
He also confirmed he would reach out to Rohit personally.
“I’ll probably call him once I get back to the dressing room or send him a message. But I definitely want to congratulate him on a fantastic Test career.”
KKR’s Playoff Hopes Fade After CSK Loss
KKR lost a close game to Chennai Super Kings despite a good start. Rahane admitted that falling short by 10–15 runs cost them dearly.
“185–195 would have been ideal. One over can change the momentum in this format,” he said, acknowledging the match-turning partnership between Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube.
With just two games left, Rahane remains hopeful:
“Try to win two out of two, and then see what happens from there.”
Rohit Sharma’s Test Legacy
Though Rahane learned of it late, Rohit Sharma’s retirement marks the end of an era. Starting in the middle order and later excelling as an opener, Rohit became a key figure in India’s red-ball resurgence. His leadership and attacking style shaped many iconic Test moments.
As tributes pour in, Rahane’s heartfelt reaction adds to the emotional farewell of one of India’s greatest modern cricketers.
